On June 21, 2016, the FAA released its long awaited Part 107 to Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (14CFR). These rules allow small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) which are under 55 lbs to be flown commercially in the National Airspace System. On August 29, 2016 the new Part 107 rules became effective and you are now required to get a Remote Pilot Certificate with a small UAS Rating in order to legally fly drones for commercial or business purposes. To get this certificate, you must PASS the FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot aeronautical knowledge test.

Please note: If you already have a Part 61 pilot certificate, you may only be required to take the online training course Part 107 small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS)ALC-451. All others can use this online course as a practice test.

University of Maine at Augusta
This Certificate program can be completed as a concentration within the Bachelor of Science degree in Aviation, within any other UMA degree program or as an independent 30-hour certificate.
Students who complete this course will be prepared to pass the FAA Part 107 test and be able to fly drones in the National Airspace System. They will fly both fixed wing and rotary winged aircraft and have the ability to design, build and repair their aircraft.
Students will also learn the use of photography, videography and photogrammetry for UAS applications.
Southern Maine Aviation
This 10-hour course will prepare you to take the FAA Part 107 Knowledge Test so that you can get your drone pilot license and fly drones commercially.
The class consists of classroom training that covers all the areas needed to pass the Part 107 test.

York County Coastal Aviation will provide ground instruction in the topics that are needed to pass the FAA Part 107 remote pilot knowledge test. You will learn about airspace classifications, aviation weather and learn how to use aviation charts and more. Unity College Distance Education
This is 3-credit hour Continuing Education Course (4.5 CEUs) focuses on how drones impact the environment and the ability to use drones to make informed decisions regarding the environment.
Students will also gain knowledge to help them study for the FAA Part 107 test.

There are many uses for unmanned aerial vehicles and drone pilots in Maine such as in precision agriculture, land management, real estate, search & rescue missions and construction.
Using a small unmanned aerial vehicle in many instances is a time saver and can reduce costs significantly. For example, the cost of surveying a road that is 15 miles long costs about $15,000 but using a drone drops the cost to one-seventh of that.
Drones are also being used at log mills like the Androscoggin mill in Jay, ME to estimate the amount of logs and chips that are in the stockpiles.
The drone flies over the piles taking photos which are then turned into 3-D images using an image processing software. These 3-dimensional models of the log piles provide a better estimation of volume than having an employee try to guess and estimate just by looking at them.
Part 107 Highlights:
- You must be at least 16 years old.
- You must hold a Remote Pilot Certificate with a Small UAS Rating or be supervised directly by someone who does have this certificate.
- The drone must not weigh more than 55 lbs including any attached cargo.
- The UAS is not allowed to fly higher than 400 feet above the ground.
- The maximum speed allowed for the drone is 100 mph.
- The UAS needs to always be within the pilot’s line of sight without binoculars.Operation of the UAS is limited to daylight hours and during twilight hours only if the drone has anti-collision lights.
- You are not allowed to fly the drone over people who are not directly involved in the UAS operation.
- If the FAA requests your drone for inspection or testing, it must be made available with all records that are required under the new rule.
- Any UAS operation that causes a serious injury, loss of consciousness or property damage (not to the UAS) of at least $500 must be reported within 10 days to the FAA.
