Illinois Drone Pilot Training and Part 107 Test Info

On June 21, 2016, the FAA released its long awaited Part 107 to Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (14CFR). These rules allow small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) which are under 55 lbs to be flown commercially in the National Airspace System. On August 29, 2016 the new Part 107 rules became effective and you are now required to get a Remote Pilot Certificate with a small UAS Rating in order to legally fly drones for commercial or business purposes. To get this certificate, you must PASS the FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot aeronautical knowledge test.

Please note: If you already have a Part 61 pilot certificate, you may only be required to take the online training course Part 107 small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) ALC-451 . All others can use this online course as a practice test.

How Do I Qualify to Become a Commercial Drone Pilot?

Is anybody allowed to operate a drone commercially? Do I have to already have a job lined up before hand? Do I have to work for the government in order to qualify?
These are important questions and they deserve specific answers. We will now provide the qualifications needed to become a commercial drone pilot.
They include the following:
- Becoming a commercial drone pilot as a private citizen – if you are a private citizen looking to enter into this field, it is an absolute must to have an FAA Remote Pilot Certificate with a Small UAS rating. You also have to be 16 years of age or older and pass vetting procedures by the TSA. Without meeting these important qualifications, you will not be able to enter into this field.
- Becoming a commercial drone pilot for a government agency – if you want to fly for a government agency, the FAA will need to provide you with a certificate of authorization. Under this certificate of authorization, there will be specific conditions that must be followed in order for you to pilot a drone.
As you can see, the rules and regulations are different for private citizens and employees of government agencies. And if you work for a government agency, you can find out everything that you need to know from your employer.
At this point, if you really are sincere about flying unmanned aircraft systems, you’ll need to think long and hard about your career path.
It will be nearly impossible for you to pass the FAA written exam if you have no experience with flying whatsoever. So you’ll need to undergo some uav pilot training in order to pass this test.
The good thing is that the training is not that difficult. And if you’re serious about it, you’ll want to take the training anyway because you’re going to enjoy it since this is something that you truly want to do.

Part 107 Highlights:
- You must be at least 16 years old.
- You must hold a Remote Pilot Certificate with a Small UAS Rating or be supervised directlybysomeone who does have this certificate.
- The drone must not weigh more than 55 lbs including any attached cargo.
- The UAS is not allowed to fly higher than 400 feet above the ground.
- The maximum speed allowed for the drone is 100 mph.
- The UAS needs to always be within the pilot’s line of sight without binoculars.Operationofthe UAS is limited to daylight hours and during twilight hours only if the drone has anti-collisionlights.
- You are not allowed to fly the drone over people who are not directly involved in theUASoperation.
- If the FAA requests your drone for inspection or testing, it must be made available withallrecords that are required under the new rule.
- Any UAS operation that causes a serious injury, loss of consciousness or property damage(notto the UAS) of at least $500 must be reported within 10 days to the FAA.
